I KNOW THAT LESS PACKAGING DOESN'T MEAN LESS PRODUCT.

By taking small steps to change my shopping habits and by using products with less packaging, I can help to keep waste out of landfills. Another way I can help to make a difference in our world.

Find Future Friendly products and tips below to help reduce the amount of packaging you consume.

MORE WAYS I CAN USE LESS PACKAGING

  • PACKAGING TIP #1: I always look for concentrated products because they are usually sold in smaller packages. Ultra Downy fabric softener helps me consume less packaging because it contains less plastic per bottle than non-concentrated Downy and softens just as many loads of laundry.

  • PACKAGING TIP #2: I buy non-perishable items in bulk. It's a great way of cutting down on unnecessary packaging. Charmin Mega Rolls contain 4 times as many sheets per roll as regular Charmin rolls, which means I could have fewer wasted cardboard cores.

  • PACKAGING TIP #3: Instead of buying little plastic packets of herbs, I grow my own. If you don't have a garden, a pot or window box will do.

What percentage of Canada's municipal solid waste comes from packaging?
  • PACKAGING TIP #4: I buy my produce from local farmers whenever I can. This avoids the extra packaging found on most grocery store produce and saves energy because there's less shipping.

  • PACKAGING TIP #5: I try to buy fresh bread from a bakery. It comes in a recyclable paper bag, so I avoid the plastic packaging on grocery store breads. I can even bring my own paper bag and pop in a loose loaf.

  • PACKAGING TIP #6: I carry my own reusable travel mug with me everywhere I go. That way I avoid using paper or Styrofoam coffee cups.

If you lined up all the paper cups used in North America in a year, how far would they reach?
